Do we ever stop to think about the saying that what goes around, comes around? A lot of times, we do things without really realizing how they affect others. Fortunately, life has a way of reminding us to be more thoughtful.
After his father passed away, a man decided he could no longer take care of his mom, so he chose to put her in a nursing home. She wasn’t happy there, and he didn’t visit her very often, just sometimes.
One day, he received a call saying that his mom’s health had gotten worse. She didn’t feel well at all. In fact, it seemed like she was in the last days of her life.
The son hurried to the nursing home. He went directly to his mother’s room and asked her if there was anything he could do for her.
The mother looked him in the eyes and said she had a few requests. When he heard that, he told her he was more than happy to fulfill her final wish.
The mom explained that she wanted the fans replaced because they weren’t working right and sometimes she felt like she couldn’t breathe. “If you could also change the refrigerator… There were times I went to bed hungry because the food went bad…,” she added.
The son was shocked. He thought his mom didn’t realize she was dying. He then asked her why she hadn’t told him all of this before. Now it was too late.
The mother looked into his eyes and said, “I know I’m going to die, but I think about you when your kids won’t want you around either… And they will bring you here… Then, you will find better care… What you give is what you get… Don’t forget that.”
These words shattered the son’s heart into a million pieces. He realized he made a mistake by leaving his mom at the nursing home against her wishes.
We must always remember that it’s our duty to ensure our parents enjoy their golden years in a way that brings them joy.
